The civic anchor of Historic Fourth Ward since 1976

Friends of Fourth Ward (Fourth Ward Foundation, Inc.) is the 501(c)3 organization that has stewarded Historic Fourth Ward since the neighborhood's 1976 revival. It is the reason the neighborhood exists as the neighborhood we know today — the Junior League partnership, the NCNB loans, the urban pioneers who bought Victorian houses in decline and restored them, and every Secret Gardens Tour, Holiday Home Tour, and Porch Crawl since.

Fourth Ward Charlotte is a Mercury Local publication. We cover the neighborhood as journalism. Friends of Fourth Ward is the neighborhood's civic body.

What Friends of Fourth Ward does

  • Neighborhood association. FOFW operates as the recognized neighborhood body for Historic Fourth Ward, representing residents to Charlotte City Council, the Historic District Commission, and Charlotte Center City Partners.
  • Annual events. The Secret Gardens Tour (spring), the Holiday Home Tour (December), the Porch Crawl, and the Green Team cleanups are FOFW programs.
  • Historic preservation. FOFW maintains the list of member HOAs and historic homes in the district and works with the Charlotte Historic District Commission on design review matters.
  • Community building. Member programs, fundraising, and ongoing neighborhood stewardship since 1976.

The walking tour is their creation

The 48-stop Historic Fourth Ward walking tour on this site is a rebuild of the Friends of Fourth Ward self-walking-tour document, with the FOFW PDF cited as the primary source on every one of the 48 stop pages. Mercury Local publishes it as native HTML because a PDF is unreadable by search engines and AI assistants; the substance of the tour — which buildings to see, in what order, with what historical context — belongs to Friends of Fourth Ward.

Their membership, donation, and event pages live at fourthwardclt.org — not here. If you live in Fourth Ward, if you moved here in the restoration era or last month, if you care about the historic character of the neighborhood: become a member or support them directly.

Our relationship

Fourth Ward Charlotte exists as a publication. Friends of Fourth Ward exists as a 501(c)3 and neighborhood association. We are not them; they are not us. What we promise them — and what this page states publicly — is that we will cover their events every year, cite their work accurately, and link to them whenever the story involves the neighborhood association or its programs.

Mercury Local publishes journalism. Friends of Fourth Ward is the civic organization the journalism covers, and links to.
