Stop 1 — Fourth Ward Park
Location: N. Poplar & W. 6th Street Type: Neighborhood park
Fourth Ward Park covers three acres at the intersection of North Poplar and West 6th Streets. Per the Friends of Fourth Ward walking-tour document, the park holds a children's playground, walking trails, decorative fountains, and benches. Two named public-art installations sit within the park: ceramic birdhouses by Joan Bankemper, crafted from discovered ceramic pieces, and "Traces of Fourth Ward" by Shaun Cassidy, a climbing-roses piece that references the distinctive older homes of the neighborhood.
The park is the anchor of the walking tour — many of the 48 stops are within a short walk — and the anchor of the neighborhood itself.
