Stop 6 — 509 North Pine Street
Year built: Turn of the century Notable: Relocated and re-oriented in 1983
The cottage at 509 North Pine Street was relocated one block and turned sideways in 1983 to fit its new location. The result: the front door sits on the side of the house, an arrangement sometimes seen in Charleston.
The re-orientation is a small piece of Fourth Ward's 1970s and 1980s restoration history — houses were routinely moved blocks, rebuilt from salvage, and reconfigured to fit surviving lots.
