Stop 42 — Mayfair Manor / Dunhill Hotel

Address: 237 North Tryon Street Year built: 1929 Style: Neoclassical Architect: Louis H. Asbury Designation: CMHLC historic landmark

The Dunhill Hotel at 237 North Tryon was built in 1929 as the Mayfair Manor, a 100-room apartment hotel, designed by local architect Louis H. Asbury in the Neoclassical style. Per Friends of Fourth Ward, the building has subsequently evolved into the 60-room Dunhill Hotel — half as many rooms, twice the space per room.

Architectural notes

The Dunhill is a nine-story symmetrical façade with double balconies at the penthouse that offer views over Uptown Charlotte. The Neoclassical detailing and the balcony arrangement make the Dunhill one of the most visible façades on the North Tryon corridor.

Louis H. Asbury

Asbury was one of Charlotte's most prolific early-20th-century architects. The 1929 Mayfair Manor is one of his signature commercial commissions in the city and is the only example of his work on this walking tour.
